He is notably a member of the Harrison family that operates the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The family gained fame through the reality TV series “Pawn Stars,” which showcases the various shenanigans that occur within the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop.

Early Life

Born on March 22, 1965, in Lexington, North Carolina, Richard Kevin Harrison is the son of Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr. and Joanne Harrison. He is the third child in the family, with an older sister named Sherry who passed away at six, an older brother Joseph, and a younger brother Chris. His father served in the U.S. Navy, and when Harrison was just two, their family moved to San Diego after his father’s transfer. Harrison began experiencing epileptic seizures around the age of eight, which often restricted him to bed and fostered a deep-seated passion for reading. He attended Taft Middle School in San Diego but left during his sophomore year to focus on his venture selling counterfeit Gucci bags, earning about $2,000 a week. In April 1981, the Harrison family relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Career

After settling in Las Vegas, Harrison’s father established their first secondhand store in 1981. This initial Gold & Silver Coin Shop was a small 300-square-foot establishment on Las Vegas Boulevard. During the day, Harrison assisted in the store, while at night he would repossess vehicles. In 1986, they relocated the shop to a more spacious location in downtown Las Vegas. Unfortunately, they lost the lease in 1988, prompting another move to a new commercial building on Las Vegas Boulevard. Harrison and his father envisioned transforming the coin shop into a pawnshop, considering it a natural progression for their business. However, a Las Vegas law from 1955 complicated matters, limiting the issuing of new pawn shop licenses based on the city’s population. By 1988, Las Vegas’s population exceeded 640,000, leading Harrison to call the city’s statistician weekly to apply for one of these rare pawn licenses. This application process concluded successfully in 1989, and the Harrisons opened the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop near the Las Vegas Strip, where they partnered until his father passed away in 2018.

By 2005, the Harrisons were issuing around $3 million in loans annually, generating approximately $700,000 in income from interest. By 2006, their pawn shop gained a reputation for its unique collection of sports memorabilia and became a popular destination for gamblers needing to pawn items for gas money to return home.

For four years after a PBS documentary in 2001 and an appearance on the Comedy Central show Insomniac with Dave Attell in 2003, Harrison pitched the concept of a television show centered on his pawnshop. The idea circulated among HBO and YouTube before catching the interest of the History Channel, which developed it into the hit show Pawn Stars, presently recognized as the highest-rated program on the network. Premiering in July 2009, Pawn Stars has aired for 21 seasons and 633 episodes as of June 2023, becoming the most popular show on The History Channel and enjoying a unique renewal pattern, often in batches of 80 episodes.for any television show, especially a reality series.

Personal Life

At the age of 17, Harrison’s girlfriend Kim became pregnant. Although they experienced a miscarriage, the couple chose to get married. Their first child, Corey, was born on April 27, 1983, and two years later, they welcomed their second child, Adam. Shortly after Adam’s arrival, Harrison and Kim separated.

Nine months later, Harrison encountered Tracy, the woman who would later become his second wife, during a blind double date. Following six months of dating, they decided to move in together, and eight months later, they tied the knot while taking on the responsibility of raising Corey and Adam. Ultimately, they divorced.

In 2012, after two divorces, Harrison announced his engagement to Deanna Burditt, who also had been married twice. They exchanged vows on July 21, 2013, in Laguna Beach, California, but their marriage ended in divorce in September 2020. In 2021, Harrison wed Amanda Palmer.

Rick Harrison has shown interest in politics and contemplated a run for Nevada’s governor in 2022, while also considering a U.S. Senate run for 2024.

Lawsuit

Following the passing of Richard Harrison, known as “The Old Man,” in 2018, Rick’s mother, Joanne, initiated a lawsuit regarding a dispute over family assets and the ownership of their Las Vegas pawn shop. The lawsuit claims that while she was hospitalized in 2000/2001, Rick had her sign away her 51% ownership of the business. According to the lawsuit, after Richard’s death in 2018, Joanne inherited his 49% share of the pawn shop, but Rick did not provide her with complete financial documentation. Joanne also contends that she has not been able to obtain a thorough accounting of over $500,000 in cash and silver she believes her husband amassed before he passed. She is seeking unspecified damages, an accounting of assets, and a court order prohibiting Rick Harrison from utilizing her funds along with a “constructive trust” over her rightful property.

Real Estate

In 2019, Harrison placed his Red Rock Country Clubhouse in Summerlin, Las Vegas, on the market for $3.99 million. This home, which spans 8,845 square feet, was constructed in 2001. He acquired the property in 2016 and invested approximately $600,000 in renovations. The formal sitting room features granite flooring that is acid-washed, cut into planks, and arranged like a hardwood floor, costing $45,000. The house includes two bedrooms on the lower level and two more upstairs, along with a gym convertible into a bedroom. Additionally, it hosts seven bathrooms, a 12-seat home theater equipped with a 150-inch screen and a curtain, and a wine cellar capable of holding over 1,000 bottles. An elevator and a central sound system allow music to be played in any room via a mobile phone.

The front of the residence showcases views of Red Rock Canyon’s Spring Mountains, while the backyard overlooks the Strip and the Arroyo Golf Club. The upstairs game room features a balcony at the rear of the home. The outdoor space includes a lagoon-style pool, an elevated spa, and a gate leading to the golf course, along with a 10-foot waterfall and a lazy river that flows into the pool. An outdoor kitchen is also part of the backyard. Harrison selected the neighborhood due to his children attending high school in the area, but as they are now adults, he no longer requires the additional space.
