Early Life

William Leonard Roberts II was born on January 28, 1976, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and was raised in Carol City, Florida. He completed his education at Miami Carol City Senior High School before attending Albany State University, a historically black college, on a football scholarship.

Career

Ross began his career as a correctional officer, working for 18 months from December 1995 until his resignation in June 1997. He initially debuted under the name Teflon Da Don, later adopting the name Rick Ross in the mid-2000s, influenced by the former drug kingpin “Freeway” Rick Ross.

He made waves in 2006 with his debut single “Hustlin,” which provoked a bidding war, attracting offers from Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment and Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. Ultimately, Ross signed a multimillion-dollar contract with Jay-Z’s Def Jam Records. That same year, he released his debut album, Port of Miami, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. He followed with his second album, Trilla, in 2008, achieving the same number one position on the Billboard 200.

In 2009, Ross launched the record label Maybach Music Group, through which he produced his studio albums, including Deeper Than Rap (2009), Teflon Don (2010), God Forgives, I Don’t (2012), Mastermind, Hood Billionaire (both in 2014), Black Market (2015), Rather You Than Me (2017), Port of Miami 2 (2019), and Richer Than I Ever Been (2021). He was also the first artist to sign with Diddy’s management firm, Ciroc Entertainment.

In a conventional sense, Ross has faced legal troubles – he was arrested due to guns and drugs, and has encountered various lawsuits from others within the music industry. In January 2008, charges for gun possession and marijuana led to Ross’s arrest. During a deposition held with Officer Rey Hernandez, the Miami Beach police officer who conducted the arrest, Ross’s attorney inquired why the gang task force was assigned to Ross’s case. The officer indicated it was due to Ross’s claimed affiliation with the Carol City Cartel (also known as Triple C’s) and other recognized gang members. However, the officer failed to present any evidence linking Ross to the gang.

In August 2008, a lawsuit for assault and battery was filed against Ross by YouTube entertainer DJ Vlad. Vlad accused Ross of orchestrating an ambush during the 2008 Ozone Awards in Houston, Texas, following inquiries concerning Ross’s past as a correctional officer.

In June 2010, “Freeway” Ricky Ross initiated a copyright infringement lawsuit against him for the use of his name in a California federal court. The ruling in favor of rapper Rick Ross on December 30, 2013, allowed him to retain the name based on First Amendment grounds.

In 2021, Rick Ross consented to provide his ex-girlfriend Briana Singleton with $11,000 monthly in child support for their three shared children.

As a Christian, Rick Ross expressed in an interview with Corey “Coco Brother” Condrey on Lift Every Voice that “I had told myself at one point no matter what I go through, I never question God.” Furthermore, Ross mentioned that he prays prior to every performance.

On January 27, 2013, during the celebration of his 37th birthday, Ross and his girlfriend were targets of a drive-by shooting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Fortunately, neither Ross nor his girlfriend sustained injuries, though they crashed their vehicle into an apartment while attempting to evade the shooting.

In 2015, Ross had a brief engagement with Lira “Galore” Mercer.

Criticism arose in 2017 when Ross expressed in an interview that he refrained from signing a female rapper because “I would end up f*cking [her] and f*cking the business up.” He quickly made amends with a Facebook post, referring to his comments as “insensitive” and a “mistake [he regrets].”
