Early Life

Born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Magdalane Boyle grew up as the youngest among nine siblings, with four brothers and four sisters. Her father, Patrick, was a WWII veteran and miner, while her mother, Bridget, worked as a shorthand typist. Additionally, he occasionally entertained as a singer in a venue named the Bishop’s Blaize. Throughout her childhood, Boyle faced bullying and believed that a challenging birth deprived her of oxygen, which resulted in a learning disability. However, as an adult, she discovered that she had been misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome along with an “above average” IQ. Although she struggled academically and did not earn many qualifications, she took vocal lessons from Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle utilized her savings to finance a professionally recorded demo, which she distributed to various record companies, radio talent competitions, and local and national television. The demo featured her singing “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition on “Britain’s Got Talent,” these tracks became available online. Other early works, including her rendition of “Cry Me a River” on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” which she contributed to in 1999, also surfaced on the internet after her first television appearance.

Encouraged by her mother to audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” after winning several singing competitions, she initially hesitated, having previously bailed on an audition for “The X Factor” due to concerns about being judged on her appearance. Although she contemplated skipping her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” her former vocal coach O’Neil persuaded her to proceed.
